HOKKAIDO

ASAHIDAKE

ENJOYING THE POWDER SNOW RIDE FROM THE TOP OF HOKKAIDO.

The Taisetsu mountain range in Hokkaido consists of 20 peaks all over 2000 meters in altitude. In the past, the Ainu (indigenous people of Hokkaido) called it “Kamuimintara” meaning ‘Playground of the Gods’ in their language. Asahidake, 2,291 meters high, is the tallest mountain in Hokkaido. Asahidake is an adventure skier’s paradise located within the largest national park in Japan.
There are 13 active volcanoes in Hokkaido, one of those being Asahidake. When the skies clear and you see this volcano, it is quite breathtaking. You can get close to the fumaroles (gas vents) during the winter months and watching the steam billow out from the vents, you’ll definitely feel the power and energy of the earth.
With limited terrain and exposure to harsh weather conditions, why do people come here from all over the world? Without a doubt, it is the snow. When conditions are at their best, it is some of the deepest and lightest powder you will ever experience. For the ultimate powder experience, a guide and avalanche equipment are a must. You no longer need to spend a fortune on heli-skiing. The ropeway takes you straight to this powdery paradise in just 10 minutes! After you’ve refreshed your soul on the mountain and left the cold and the deep powder behind, come back down to an altitude of 1100m to the Asahidake onsen area, slide into one of the many hot springs and
rejuvenate your body.
