Nozawa Onsen started to run as Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort from 1924,although the record indicates that people skied on the Nozawa Onsen slopes in 1911, a year after when it is said that skiing was introduced to Japan. Nozawa Onsen is one of the oldest ski resorts in Japan. It hosted the Biathlon event at the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics. The slope starts from thetop of Mt. Kenashi (1650m) to the bottom, 1085m difference in altitude, and 297 hector in total dimensions. With its history and snow quality, Nozawa Onsen is ranked as a top snow resort in Japan. 100% natural snow and the quality and the variety of snow is ranked No.1 in Japan. Nozawa Onsen and St.Anton are sister snow resorts and both villages have a unique ski culture with their own traditional ways. In 1930, Hannes Schneider created the Nozawa Onsen Ski culture by teaching Arlberg ski techniques. Nozawa Onsen is very friendly to people from abroad and English maps, pamphlets and signs are prepared for them.Nozawa Onsen has been making an great efforts to preserve the ambience of Japanese traditional Onsen village as well as to provide a comfortable environment for skiers and snowboarders.
