2002年に日本に来日した時のインタビューでの1コマ。パーマーの姿をファインダー越しに覗いていた時に、「腕にある時計のようなタトゥって、4時30分を指しているのかな」となにげなくつぶやくと、不敵な笑みを浮かべたパーマーが言い放った。「フーン、よく見ているな。でもコイツは4時29分を指しているんだぜ！！ なぜかって？　それは、オレの最初のキャデラックの排気量が4.29リットルだったからさ。それにホラ、この体のタトゥは、全部キャデラックだと。家の近所でBMXに乗って遊んでいたガキの頃から、オレにとってクルマといえば、『キャデラック』だったんだ。で15歳の誕生日の時だったかな、祖母にプレゼントしてもらったクルマがキャデラックのリムジンだった。で、コイツの排気量が4.29リットルだったというわけ」。

ちなみに来日した時、すでに全部で13台のキャデラックを自宅の駐車場に保有していたとか。なかでも50年代後半から60年代前半のキャデラックが、とくに好みだったようだ。そして最後に、「ボードはハートで乗りこなせ！！」という一言で、このインタビューは終了。なんか、カッコいいというか、なんというか？

During an interview in Japan in 2002, there was a moment when I peered through the viewfinder at Palmer and casually remarked, “Is that tattoo on your arm like a watch, pointing to 4:30?” Palmer, sporting a daring grin, replied, “Hmm, you’re quite observant. But this one is pointing to 4:29!!” Wondering why, he continued, “Well, that’s because my first Cadillac had a displacement of 4.29 liters. And you see, all the tattoos on my body are Cadillacs. Ever since I was a kid riding BMX bikes around the neighborhood, cars meant ‘Cadillac’ to me. Then, maybe on my 15th birthday, my grandmother gave me a Cadillac limousine as a gift. And its displacement was 4.29 liters.” Interestingly, when he visited Japan, he already owned a total of 13 Cadillacs in his home parking lot. He seemed to have a particular fondness for Cadillacs from the late 1950s to the early 1960s. Finally, he concluded with, “Ride the board with heart!!” and the interview came to an end. It’s somehow cool, or rather, what should I say?
